Customer accounts 🧑 help provide a more complete and personalized shopping experience. With an account, customers can store their shipping addresses, view their order history, and edit their profile. This makes it easy for them to follow up their shopping journeys and encourages them to come back again. Think on everything that customers do in the portals of big platforms such as Amazon.

Customer accounts are not enabled by default in Shopify stores. This means that customers will not be able to create accounts or log in to your store unless you activate the feature. Enabling customer accounts is a free and simple way to improve your store's checkout process and increase the critical customer retention.

  2. Step 2. In the Accounts in online store and checkout section, click on Edit.

  3. Step 3. Check the box to Show login link in the header of online store and at checkout. This will add a login link to your store's header and checkout page.

  5. Step 5. Save and it's done.

Require the customers to log-in before checkout

There's also an optional setting to require customers to log-in before being able to complete a purchase. Please note that requiring a login may discourage some customers from checking out and reduce your store's total orders. But you may use this setting if you only want registered customers to be able to checkout. For example in cases where there's a restricted registration in place. Or registration requires admin pre-approval via a third-party app.

You can find this setting not in Customer Accounts, but in the Shopify Admin > Settings > Checkout section. If you want it enabled, just tick the checkbox and Save.

New customer accounts Vs. Classic customer accounts

You may be wondering which version of Shopify Accounts will bring more value to your shop. To summarize, New Accounts has some valuable features like self-serve returns. While Classic Accounts is much more customizable in style and function. We recommend Classic Accounts for most stores. They offer a more customizable experience and are compatible with most third-party apps. Here are some more details:

  • New customer accounts are a newer version of customer accounts that aims to offer a streamlined, password-less experience. Customers can log in to their account using a one-time verification code sent to their email address, each time they log in. This can make it easier for customers to log in and checkout, and it can also help to reduce fraud. New customer accounts also support new Shopify features such as self-serve returns.
  • Classic customer accounts are the traditional version of customer accounts that have been used in Shopify for many years. Customers log in to their account using an email address and password. Classic customer accounts allow you to customize the account page and use apps to enhance the customer experience. For example you can integrate a Social Login app so customers can log-in through social media. Albeit they do not support natively new Shopify features such as self-serve returns, this can still be linked and used in the new dashboard.
